On Friday morning, December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza walked into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut and opened fire with a Glock semi-automatic handgun, a Sig Sauer semi-automatic handgun, and a .223-caliber assault rifle, ultimately killing at least 27 individuals, 20 of them being young children between the ages of 5-10. President Barack Obama released a tearful, heartbreaking statement in regards to the tragic shootings later on Friday afternoon, expressing his deep condolences not only as the President of the United States, but as a concerned and saddened parent.
Reports allege that Lanza (from Hoboken, NJ) first murdered his father Peter and mother Nancy at their home before heading to the Sandy Hook school, where he shot and killed several faculty and young students that Nancy worked with at approximately 9:40 a.m. He then died of an alleged self-inflicted gun wound. Authorities first named the gunman as Lanza's 24-year-old brother Ryan, because the gunman had Ryan's ID on him at the time of the shootings. Ryan Lanza is still currently in police custody and is further being questioned by authorities.
The story is still developing, but reports confirm that several others were wounded by gun shots along with the 27 victims. The Danbury Hospital ER is clearing room to treat all of those wounded.
Apparently Adam had gotten into an argument with his mother Nancy before the shootings occurred. Reports confirm that Adam's girlfriend and one other friend are still missing in NJ.
Obama recently announced in a tearful statement:
"So our hearts are broken today -- for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost. Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children's innocence has been torn away from them too early, and there are no words that will ease their pain... This evening, Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter and we'll tell them that we love them, and we'll remind each other how deeply we love one another. But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight. And they need all of us right now... May god bless the memory of the victims and in the words of scripture heal the broken hearted and bind up their wounds."
Thoughts go out to the Newton community during this tragic, sorrowful time.
