Details surrounding the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut early Friday morning (Dec. 14) still remain hazy, although reports now confirm that the gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, brought three guns into the school where he ultimately killed at least 26 individuals (20 young children and six adults). Those guns were allegedly registered to Adam's mother, Nancy Lanza, who he shot and killed at the family's home before driving off to the Sandy Hook school. While initial reports alleged that Nancy Lanza was a teacher at the elementary school, recent reports state that she may have had no connection with the school at all. Read on for further updated details surrounding the disturbing and heartbreaking school shooting.

Mstarz reported on Friday, December 14:

Reports allege that Adam Lanza (from Hoboken, NJ) killed his mother Nancy and father Peter at their home before heading to the Sandy Hook school, where he shot and killed several faculty and young students (between the ages of 5-10) that Nancy worked with at approximately 9:40 a.m on Friday. He then died of an alleged self-inflicted gun wound. Authorities first named the gunman as Lanza's 24-year-old brother Ryan, because the gunman had Ryan's ID on him at the time of the shootings. Apparently Adam had gotten into an argument with his mother Nancy which prompted him to go off on the morbid killing spree. While some initial reports had it Nancy was actually one of the victims found among the carnage at Sandy Hook, new reports confirm that she was shot in the face by Adam at the family's home in Newtown. He then used her car to drive to the school.

Little else is known about Adam Lanza other than that he was wearing a "black battle fatigues, military vest, and bullet proof vest" at the time of the shooting Family members insist Adam was emotionally disturbed and "not well."

An updated report on Yahoo! provides more in-depth details on the gunman as well as his mother, Nancy (Adam was supposedly an honor student at Newtown High School, and Nancy had divorced her husband Peter back in 2008).

Authorities now confirm that a Glock and a Sig Sauer, both handheld pistols, and a .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle were found in the school after the bloody massacre. The weapons were registered to Nancy Lanza. Officials are not authorized to discuss any further information at this time and they spoke on condition of anonymity. A fourth weapon was allegedly found outside the school  - investigators are currently visiting shooting ranges and gun stores around the area to see if either Nancy or Adam Lanza had frequented them.

As for the initial reports that Nancy was a teacher at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, many other faculty members insist that is not the case. Lillian Bittman, who served on the local Newtown school board until 2011, recently told news outlets, "No one has heard of her. Teachers don't know her." Talking Points Memo also reports that Nancy Lanza is not listed on the Newton School District Website. Janet Vollmer, a kindergarten teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary, also insists to CNN that Lanza was not a teacher at Sandy Hook. A recent AP report also states:

"At least one parent said Lanza's mother was a substitute teacher there. But her name did not appear on a staff list. And the law enforcement official said investigators were unable to establish any connection so far between her and the school."

Many major news outlets still provide conflicting stories - CNN and The Wall Street Journal now claim Nancy Lanza was definitely not a teacher at Sandy Hook, while The New York Times and Washington Post insist Nancy had some sort of connection with the Sandy Hook faculty.

Stay tuned in with Mstarz for further details surrounding the tragic shooting as they develop. Thoughts and condolences go out to those affected in and throughout the Newtown community.
