Rumors have been swirling that producers over at the hit FOX musical comedy-drama series "Glee" desperately want to collaborate with the popular singer/actress Bette Midler. While series creator Ryan Murphy has yet to make the call, 67-year-old Midler admits that she's definitely ready to sign up for a "Glee" guest star appearance. The only thing holding such a highly-anticipated appearance back is the fact that Midler is still waiting for an official invite!

Access Hollywood's Shan Robinson spoke with the legendary Broadway, film, and music star on Friday (Dec. 14), where the Academy Award winner addressed the "Glee" rumors:

"I don't know. [Ryan Murphy] never called me... He mentioned it, but... I'm still waiting for the call. But, it's fine!"

Out promoting her new family film "Parental Guidance" (also starring Billy Crystal, which hits theaters on Christmas Day, Dec. 25), Midler explains how the whole "Glee" guest-star appearance talk came about. Murphy and Midler both recently attended an event to honor the legendary fashion designer Michael Kors when the singing show's co-creator made his public appeal:

"Ryan was also honored that night and he said [in his speech], 'If Bette Midler's in the house I want to invite her onto 'Glee,'" she recounted. "And I went, 'OK!'"

If Murphy does finally make a move, Midler insists she'd love to take on a role similar to Jane Lynch's hilariously villainous character, Sue Sylvester:

"I love her. She's hilarious. Maybe I could play [Sue's] evil sister!"

New episodes of "Glee" are set to premiere sometime in January 2013 - would fans like to see Midler appear on the popular television musical? Rumors already have it that "American Idol" sweetheart Jessica Sanchez may take on a role reminiscent of Barbara Streisand... looks like the new season may have a lot of big surprises in store!
