News broke earlier this month that Ex Machina breakout star Alicia Vikander had dropped out of the Assassin's Creed movie, starring her real-life boyfriend Michael Fassbender, which has a release date set for December 21, 2016. Though we'll surely miss this actress in the film, Fox has already replaced her with the Award-winning starlet Ariane Labed, who will portray a female Assassin in the movie adaptation of the popular Ubisoft video game. Labed also joins Marion Cotillard in the Justin Kurzel-directed project. Read more on this casting news below.

Though we previously reported that Vikander would join Fassbender on screen in this live-action adaptation, scheduling issues have forced her out of the project. Instead, she will focus on the upcoming Bourne project from director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon, according to Deadline.

Meanwhile, new reports have confirmed Labed's casting in the project, bringing a relatively unknown but very talented actress into the spotlight. The 31-year-old French actress, who was born in Greece, took home the Best Actress award in Venice in 2010 for her role in Attenberg. Last year, she won the Locarno Best Actress award for her performance in Fidelio, Alice's Odyssey (via Deadline / UPROXX).

So far, this film has one of the most impressive European casts out there, including the director, but will it translate to Hollywood success? We'll get our answer later next year when this highly anticipated film hits theaters! Let us know what you think of this casting news in the comments section below!

While we wait on more updates on this movie, we can enjoy some great gameplay for the latest chapter of the film's inspiration, entitled Assassin's Creed: Syndicate. Watch around ten minutes of gameplay from the title's E3 2015 demo right here (via wccftech / Outside Xbox):
