On Wednesday, New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated after a fireworks display went awry. Despite this, you shouldn't count Pierre-Paul out for the season. A source close to the team told ESPN that he is discussing his options with his medical team and family and they'll decide what the best decision for his health will be moving forward. The source also went on to say that he'll be returning "sooner than people think."

On top of the amputated finger Pierre-Paul has a fractured right thumb. Ed Werder of ESPN says that will heal in six weeks while the site of the finger amputation will heal in half that time. He has undergone several surgeries and is expected to remain hospitalized for a few more days.

The injury to Pierre-Paul's hand comes after his best season as a pro. As of now he is not technically under contract with the team as he hasn't signed his one-year franchise tender. The deadline for players to sign such a deal is July 15. If something can't be reached by that time, Pierre-Paul would have to play under his $14.8 million tender, unless the Giants decide not to pick him up.

Pierre-Paul wasn't the only person in the NFL though he hurt themselves during the 4th of July weekend, however. Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback CJ Wilson lost two fingers on Independence Day.

Wilson's father released a statement regarding the injury.

"We are aware that C.J. was involved in an accident that occurred over the July 4th holiday," the team said in a statement. "It is our understanding that the injury occurred to one of his hands, and our primary concern at this moment is for his long-term health. We have been in contact with C.J. and are continuing to monitor the situation."
