Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters in 2016, and a new high-quality photo of Henry Cavill as Superman has been released.

Check it out here.

It's obvious from the title that the two superheroes are going to clash in a major way. Star Ben Affleck has now confirmed that his version of The Dark Knight has ties to the battle in Metropolis in Man of Steel.

"One of the things I liked was Zack’s idea of showing accountability and the consequences of violence and seeing that there are real people in those buildings," Affleck said to EW about the scene. "And in fact, one of those buildings was Bruce Wayne’s building so he knew people who died in that Black Zero event."

Snyder also talked about why the seemingly gratuitous violence was necessary in the final act of the first movie.

"There are other superhero movies where they joke about how basically no one’s getting hurt. That’s not us. What is that message? That’s it’s okay that there’s this massive destruction with zero consequence for anyone?" he said. "That’s what Watchmen was about in a lot of ways too. There was a scene, that scene where Dan and Laurie get mugged. They beat up the criminals. I was like the first guy, I want to show his arm get broken. I want a compound fracture. I don’t want it to be clean. I want you to go, ‘Oh my God, I guess you’re right. If you just beat up a guy in an alley he’s not going to just be lying on the ground. It’s going to be messy."

Fans also know Wonder Woman will have a relatively significant role in the film. But director Zack Snyder said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that she actually plays a more important role than one might have thought.

"She plays a super-important part," Snyder said. "In a lot of ways, she’s the gateway drug to
the rest of the
Justice League."

Snyder had actress Gal Gadot read a scene from Pulp Fiction for her audition, but she had no idea that she was reading for the role of Wonder Woman.

"I knew [the role] was big and it was for one of the franchises. He said, ‘Well, I don’t know how big she is in Israel…’ and my jaw just dropped," she said. "There are so many expectations for this character, it’s impossible not to
be a little nervous about it."

But once she got rolling, Gadot loved the work she was doing. "I love doing the swordplay stuff. It’s another skill to add to my collection," she said. But what about the iconic lasso? "I’m still
working on that," she added.
