Before rapper Drake became a YMCMB superstar, Lil Wayne had little faith in the Toronto native. In fact, Weezy found Drizzy's rhymes way too honest for hip-hop!

In a recent radio interview with Wild Wayne on Q93, the New Orleans emcee explains his initial reaction to hearing the "Hold On We're Going Home" crooner's music back in 2009:

"They had to sell Drizzy on me... I had to hear Drizzy way more than I needed to hear Nicki. I heard Drizzy, I was like, I don't know. What is this? And truthfully when I seen him, I was really like, I don't know. I'm not sure. What I mean by that is the music was so honest - we as listeners, we weren't used to that yet... We've never heard rap be honest like that."

Obviously, Weezy considered Nicki Minaj the bigger star. But eventually things changed, and Christina Milian's lover got more excited about the "Degrassi" actor's potential:

"The moment I heard him sing, the moment I heard a song with him singing, I was like, 'So who's that on this part?' I'm listening to the song, I'm asking the dude, 'Who's that on this part? That person can really sing.' And they was like, 'That's him, too.' I was like, 'That's the guy that's rapping?' They was like, 'Yeah.' I was like, 'OK, print him up a contract, let's go.'"

And the rest is Cash Money history (despite recent industry drama involving Birdman).

Rap-A-Lot founder J. Prince actually first discovered Drizzy and introduced him to the #FWA hypeman. His memory of the entire situation is quite similar:

"I put on 'Replacement Girl' and look over and see that he's bopping his head, and I'm like, 'OK!'" Prince initially told The FADER. "So I put on another song - an 'A Milli' remix Drake did. Wayne was like, 'Who's this?' I was like, 'Oh, this n*gga Drake that you told me you didn't like.' [But] I played Wayne another song, called 'Brand New,' and I'm like, 'He sings, too.' Wayne is like, 'Hold up, man, this dude is really f*cking dope.' He's like, 'Where is he at?' I told him in Canada, and Wayne was like, 'Let's fly him here right now'" (via MTV).

Hey - Drake's probably not complaining! His highly-anticipated new album Views From The 6 will likely hit airwaves sometime later this year.
