It's a sad day to be a Game of Thrones fan, as it is being revealed that there is an end date in mind for the HBO megahit. While the series is based off of a series of seven books, the cable provider has revealed that they will put the kingdom of Westeros to bed after season eight. While the show is currently in the process of filming for season six, which will debut in the spring of 2016, fans will have to get as much of a fill for Daenerys Targaryen, Sansa Stark and Cersei Lannister as they can over the next three years or so.

The president of programming at HBO, Michael Lombardo, explained that he felt that the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are only expected to get three more seasons worth of material filmed, according to Us Weekly.

"[They] are probably feeling there are two more years after [season 6]," Lombardo explained. "Seven seasons and out has never been the conversation. The question is how many beyond the seventh season we're gonna do."

However, one person that fans won't be reunited with is Jon Snow, who the source is reporting is definitely done, despite the reports that Kit Harington was busy filming with the cast in Belfast.

"Dead is dead is dead. He be dead," the insider explained. "Everything I've seen, head, and read, Jon Snow is dead."

Yet, there might be a sliver of hope for fans, and even a way to be reunited with some dearly departed characters from the past, as a prequel series could also be a possibility in the future.

"It really depends fully for us on what [the showrunners] want to do," Lombardo revealed, adding he is "open" to it.
