Jessica Alba Gets Complaints About Honest Sunscreen After Customers Get Burned

Jessica Alba's The Honest Company is in a bit of trouble after the internet exploded on Friday with customer complaints claiming that Honest's sunscreen SPF 30 didn't work properly. Many customers posted photos of their burns and details of how they were using the product. One man showed his bald head badly burned and then commented that he had only been out in the sun for an hour. Buzzfeed reports, "In addition to causing painful burns, customers said the sunscreen also left a white residue on their skin...The controversy began to gain traction after a post by Indiana mom Gretta Stabler was picked up by NBC Chicago. Stabler told the station she reapplied the sunscreen three times on her daughter Maggie, but her child still was burned." Many of the Honest Company's products are in fact, targeted at families with children and the issue is of great concern seeing as children will be using the seemingly "unsafe" product.

Once hearing the complaints and receiving such poor reviews on Amazon, the company issued a statement addressing the issue and countless viral complaints. "Our Sunscreen Lotion was tested, by an independent 3rd party, against the protocols prescribed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's (FDA) monograph for over-the-counter sunscreen products. The results showed that our product is effective and safe for use as an 80 minute water-resistant (FDA's highest rating), SPF 30 sunscreen lotion in accordance with FDA regulations when used as directed (Shake Well. Apply liberally and evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying and at least every 2 hours)," People reports. The question remains, if all is indeed true, then why are so many people getting burned? Is there another issue with the sunscreen that went undetected?

Sadly, this wasn't the end for the controversy for the seemingly successful company. Yahoo!News reports, "NBC Chicago first reported that Alba's billion-dollar empire, which is built upon the foundation of "safe and eco-friendly" baby and household products, was facing backlash from outraged parents claiming that the sunscreen did nothing to prevent burns. Customers condemned the product in Amazon reviews (57% of the 135 reviewers gave the product one star) while others took to Twitter to share their outrage over the sunscreen." We can only hope that this gets cleared up. Will these offended customers receive some sort of apology? Will Honest be looking into the matter to investigate the integrity of their products? It has yet to be seen and right now it may be that the once successful company will now face trouble when once loyal customers shop for their children.
