Tina Fey is wrapping up 30 Rock this week but has already hinted at a new project: a musical adaptation of her 2004 teen comedy film, Mean Girls. Fey has even mentioned wanting American Idol judge and all-around diva Mariah Carey for a key role. But after 9 years, would any new take on Mean Girls be a good move?

Most of us remember Mean Girls as a film showing another side of high school life, packed with quotable lines still used today. Some remember it as the last movie we enjoyed Lindsay Lohan in, before her meltdowns and run-ins with the law. Either way, it is still a relevant fixture of pop culture that helped audiences see Tina Fey's range as a writer outside of Saturday Night Live. Apparently, she even has the range to turn this comedy into a musical.

The recent trend in the movie industry is reboots and remakes, which are getting a little carried away, if you ask me. A musical, on the other hand, is definitely a fresh take on the idea and is something Fey would put her heart into. She has mentioned working on this musical with her husband, who is an accomplished musician and did the music for 30 Rock. But who would play Lindsay Lohan's character? Most importantly, who would be cast as the infamous Regina George? This musical will easily launch the careers of whomever they cast, just like the film (two huge stars now Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried both got there break with the 2004 film).

Plus Fey wants to add Mariah Carey into the mix. The diva recently referenced Mean Girls on an episode of American Idol while arguing with Nicki Minaj. Carey is clearly familiar with the material and has the talent this project. This sounds like a dream come true to Mean Girls fans.

Most importantly, this new musical can introduce a whole new generation to Mean Girls in a really creative way. On top of the die-hard fans that will surely plan whole events around seeing the musical, it is safe to assume that many parents will allow their teenagers to see it. After all, it is a coming-of-age story focussing on the horrors of popularity and high school sociology. Tina Fey showed a generation that people can just be mean at a certain age and how to deal with these new situations. As a musical, the audience will grow and the message will reach more and more people. Who knows, Mean Girls might even become an iconic musical, spanning many years and reaching millions over time.
