Shannen Doherty Has Breast Cancer Sues Her Management Company Over Lapsed Insurance

Beverly Hills 90210 star Shannen Doherty has breast cancer - and sued her former management company, Tanner Mainstain, because of it. She says that they failed to manage her medical insurance, which would have helped detect the cancer earlier.

Doherty told People that she is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The lawsuit says her doctors found "invasive breast cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node" and she may have to undergo chemotherapy and a mastectomy.

"I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life," Doherty told People. "I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me."

The lawsuit was obtained by TMZ. It says that the management firm took 5 percent of her earnings to manage finances, which included medical insurance. However, the firm did not pay the premium for 2014, causing her insurance to be canceled and she couldn't re-enroll until 2015. Doherty left the management firm in 2014.

Because the premium was unpaid, Doherty was unable to see her doctors in 2014. When she was able to go on her insurance in March 2015, she learned she had cancer. The doctors said it likely developed during 2014, and if she had been able to find it earlier, she could have avoided the heavy treatment she probably now has to go through.

"Tanner Mainstain is saddened to learn that Ms. Doherty is suffering from cancer and wishes her a full recovery," the management company said in a statement to TMZ. "However, the claim that Tanner Mainstain caused her to be uninsured, prevented her from seeking medical care, or somehow contributed to her cancer is patently false."

Doherty's husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko, is also suing Tanner Mainstain. He is suing them over taxes and a claim that the firm did not make the payments they were supposed to on a mortgage loan for a property, causing a foreclosure.
