It's the age-old question: what celebrities are pot smokers? Well, okay, it's the age-old question for people who smoke pot, at least. But with the 2016 presidential elections coming (in a much longer time than you'd expect given all the reporting), some people are curious as to their stance on the legalization of marijuana. And, well, guess what: even though not all of them are for the legalization, it seems that most have actually smoked it.

Some, actually, have even enjoyed it.

Per a report from The Huffington Post, almost "one out of every two Americans" have tried pot. And with states such as Washington and Colorado fully legalizing the drug, it's no wonder that many believe – and really, really, really hope – that it will one day be legalized nationwide.

The unfortunate truth about those who smoke pot is that they are oftentimes seen as "stoners" – lazy, potato chip-eating do-nothings who, well, do nothing with their lives. But given the new list from the Marijuana Policy Project, which disusses 50 of the most influential Americans who have smoked pot, the hope is to change the perception of the terms "pothead" and "stoner."

With that, let's take a look at some presidential candidates who have indeed tried pot in their lifetimes. And wouldn't you believe it, there are a few Republicans on here!

SENATOR RICK SANTORUM – R
Santorum reportedly has tried pot, saying that it was something he did back when he was in college.

GOVERNOR LINCOLN CHAFEE – D
Not only did Chafee come clean about smoking pot when he was younger, but he also mentioned that he tried cocaine in the 70s while attending Brown University. #YouDoYou

SENATOR BERNIE SANDERS – D
The Democratic presidential candidate reportedly tried marijuana twice but it "didn't quite work" for him. However, he did note, "It's not my thing, but it is the thing of a whole lot of people."

SENATOR RAND PAUL – R
Paul claims that one of the mistakes he made when he was a kid was smoking pot. He also said he was a choir boy when in college. "...and I can say that I made mistakes when I was a kid."

SENATOR TED CRUZ – R
A spokesperson for Cruz claimed that he "foolishly experimented" with marijuana when he was younger.

Also on the list are people such as Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, John Kerry, Stephen Colbert, and many more.

And of course, Bill Maher and Snoop Dogg are on there.
