John Mayer recently reflected on his infamous dating past and summed it all up with the line, "I was just a jerk." The 35-year-old singer-songwriter has been known to kiss and tell, revealing intaimate details of his relationships with such starlets as Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Minka Kelly, Jessica Simpson, and Taylor Swift. Though with his new relationship with pop star Katy Perry and his recent vocal cord surgery it seems like Mayer is trying to distance himself from the negative press he built up over the years.

Each of Mayer's past flings usually ended with the "Clarity" singer looking like the bad guy and he took off running with most of the situations. He became a jokester with paparazzi and would often play pranks on gossip news source, TMZ. Sure this was very funny and gained the singer some new fans for other reasons other than his music, but it also had a negative effect. Mayer took this comedic persona and mixed it into his personal life. Whenever a relationship would go south, Mayer would be asked by many news sources about the break ups. Mayer would not take the situation seriously, resulting in him looking like, well, a jerk. When he and Taylor Swift split, the young pop singer released the song "Dear John," which pretty much summed up their relationship and the kind of person Mayer was. Swift denies that the song is about John Mayer, but she is widely known to write songs about her break ups, so odds are it is in fact about him. In a now notorious interview for Playboy Magazine in 2010, Mayer opened up on his relationship with Jessica Simpson and laid the groundwork for his jerk persona. He called her "sexual napalm" and compared her to "crack cocaine." Clearly Mayor was just saying the most ridiculous things he could and it became huge news. He had to apologize for the strange comments and has become seen as somewhat of a creep to the world as a result.

After being forced off of a tour last year to undergo vocal cord surgery, it seems like Mayor began to reevaluate his actions and really regret them. With his new relationship with Katy Perry going strong and his vocal cords almost fully recovered, it seems like John Mayor is going to be taking things a little more seriously. Of his past, the musician says:

"It's very liberating when you finally realize it's impossible to make everyone like you. I wanted everybody to like me. I thought I was one shuck and jive away in every direction."
