Katy Perry became the center of a social media scandal after a screenshot of an alleged nasty text to a fan's ex-boyfriend went viral. The “Fireworks” singer was performing at one of the Australian stops on her Prismatic World Tour when she stopped to take a selfie with a fan’s phone in response to their ex-boyfriend claiming that Perry could not sing live. What happened next shook up her fan base, and social media, as a screenshot was released of an alleged nasty message from Perry to the fan’s ex-partner that contained some foul words. It turns out that message was not drafted up by the pop icon herself, but another fan who was having fun with memes.

At the concert, Perry did actually take the fan’s phone, read the message to the crowd, and then commented on her thoughts that it was from her ex-boyfriend:

"He's not going to be happy about that. Just sent him a little picture. He's your ex-boyfriend and you still have a WhatsApp group with him? What are you doing? Do not text your ex. We need to talk after the show."

Once the meme went viral after the show, Perry took to her Twitter to shoot down the allegations, stating, "I NEVER wrote those words, that is an EDITED picture or the person added it after I took it. I would NEVER use the C word."

The fan behind the photo eventually admitted their wrong-doing. "I put this together back in December as a joke with NO intentions of any conflict. Please realize I had no bad intentions. If anything it was supposed to make people laugh, not spread like wildfire through media. I apologize for any confusions,” the user wrote.

Eventually, Perry thanked the fan for the apology, and clearing up the mess. We’re glad the rumors aren’t true, and that the singer had some clean fun to get back at a fan’s ex.
