Five Los Angeles Police Department officers are under investigation after the mysterious death of a 35-year-old African American mother who died suddenly after she was detained by the officers.

An investigation has been opened up by the LAPD of the death of Alesia Thomas who suffocated to death in the backseat of the patrol car after being placed under arrest for an alleged child endangerment after reports say she left her two children, ages 3 and 12 at an LAPD station. Police later went to her home to issue a warrant for child endangerment and place her under arrest. Police Chief Charlie Beck is looking deep into the investigation, "I take all in-custody death investigations very seriously," he said, according to the L.A. Times.

The LAPD reports that Thomas struggled and "began actively resisting arrest." Cmdr. Green admitted to the L.A. Times that she would be kicked in her genitals for resisting and later kicked her while another officer told Thomas, to "get your fat ass in the car" Green confirmed.

Thomas eventually stopped breathing and died at the hospital. Dash-cam footages are being reviewed by the LAPD for further investigation. According to Gerald McCrary Sr., and his live-in caregiver, Charmaine Hood, they believed Thomas was the aggressor, "I didn't see them try to harm her in any shape or fashion," Hood says. "I seen them protect her from hurting herself."

Uncertain with different accounts from eyewitnesses, Police Chief Beck added, "I am confident we will get to the truth no matter where that leads us." Beck continued, "One officer preformed a leg sweep and took Thomas to the ground to gain control of her."

A statement made separately by an LAPD spokesman says, "An in-car video was reviewed which revealed some questionable tactics and improper comments."
