Oscar Pistorius, who made history last year as the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics, has been charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Early reports stated that the 26-year-old Olympian mistook his 30-year-old girlfriend as an intruder in the early hours of this morning and shot her to death. Unfortunately, police updated the media with news of neighbors hearing shouting and screams many hours before the shooting, as well as previous incidents that involved police being called to the address. It seems like Pistorius intentionally shot Steenkamp in a domestic dispute. i will appear in court later today for the murder of his girlfriend.

The reports of accidental shooting were backed up by some stories of a failed Valentine's surprise. Apparently, Steenkamp was attempting to celebrate the holiday with a bit of an early morning gesture, but Pistorius was a little too surprised. Reporter Tom Steinfort tweeted this news earlier today:

In fact, Reeva’s last tweet, posted yesterday, seems to allude to this being a plausible story:

These early reports however did not come from police, so spokesperson Denise Beukes, released the following statement in response to the circulating claims:

"It would be very premature and very irresponsible of me to say what actually has happened. There have been allegations. We are not sure. I'm not going to elaborate on it but there have been incidents (at Pistorius' home)."

These "allegations" that Beukes refers to are previous incidents "of a domestic nature" at the double amputee runner's home. This is a very strange and sad way to start off Valentine's Day this year but the shooting was possibly inevitable. Pistorius has apparently always been a little jumpy with his gun according to his Twitter account:

Again, a lot of evidence supports both claims and with Pistorius appearing in court later today, perhaps the real reason will come to light. Right now it seems like the mistaken identity claim is the nicest way to look at this tragedy, but a more dramatic reason is most likely the case for the shooting death of Reeva Steenkamp.
