This is a picture of a cancer survivor's chest, which is now covered in an ornate tattoo in celebration of her ordeal and endurance but Facebook has deemed this photo "inappropriate" for the website and has removed in a number of times. In protest, the Custom Tattoo Design page where the photo is posted has continuously reposted the picture and has asked its nearly 60,000 followers to like, comment on, and share the photo. Since February 13, this photo, which Facebook considered "nudity," has garnered over 140,000 likes, almost 18,000 comments, and has been shared almost 118,000 times. Facebook has seemingly given up on trying to remove the photo again.
The page details this account with its plea under the post, stating:
Hello Everyone, This Tattoo was done for a woman who had breast cancer! Facebook keeps removing the post in 24hour as an offensive photo do to nudity. However we feel this woman is both brave and strong so were going to post it anyways and ask for your awareness and support; Please like and share this photo quickly to show your support for this and many other women who have lost so much. (Kind Comments are welcome) thanks!
As you can see, this picture does not depict nudity. What we see is an intricately detailed tattoo on the bare chest of a cancer survivor. That is all and that is beautiful. Of the over 17,000 comments left under the post, the message is clear: the supporters of this picture and what it stands for find it to be "beautiful," "cool," "brave," and "tasteful" but not "offensive." What the commenters do find to be "offensive" is the actions of Facebook. Though the post welcomes "kind comments," some stray away from those guidelines (while still respecting the photo itself) and express how the removal of such a picture is disrespectful towards cancer survivors and victims.
Facebook does have a policy regarding nudity in pictures but it does not have a concise explanation of what qualifies as nudity. Perhaps if this were ratified then we would be more understanding when the site takes down certain pictures. Unfortunately Facebook is in the wrong on this case and has seemingly admitted that considering it has left this post up since February 13 without any more attempts to take it down or punish the poster. What do you think of the photo? Please feel free to use the comment section to share your opinion.
