Supermoon Lunar Eclipse, Blood Moon 2015: When is it Happening?

So just what is this whole supermoon lunar eclipse thing that everyone is talking about? And more importantly, when the heck is it happening? Well, no worries, folks; MStars News has your back. Oftentimes known as a Blood Moon, the moon will be both full and "in its closest point in its orbit around the Earth" later tonight, Sunday, Sept. 27. More specifically, the moon will appear to be 14% larger and 33% brighter, per a report from USA Today.

With that, a lunar eclipse will occur alongside, making it fall within the shadow of the Earth.

What causes the red color is amount of "light scatters" from the Earth's atmosphere, giving it the below look:

Now, here's the timeline for tonight's event:

Sept. 27, 9:07 p.m. – Supermoon lunar eclipse begins with a "partial eclipse."
Sept. 27, 10:11 p.m. – The "total phase will commence."
Sept. 27, 10:47 p.m. – The lunar eclipse will be at its strongest.
Sept. 27, 11:23 p.m. – The moon moves outside of the Earth's shadow.
Sept. 28, 12:27 a.m. – The moon is completely out of the shadow of the Earth.

So, why is this a big deal? Well, the publication claims that the last time this occurred was way back in 1982, and it won't occur again until 2033. Because of this, director of Butler University's Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium, Brian Murphy, claims "This one is prime time."
