Two police officers are being credited with saving a baby's life after the child was wrongly declared dead. According to the Toronto Sun, the mother tried to walk to the hospital in freezing temperatures, but failed to make it to the hospital in time. The woman gave birth to the baby on the sidewalk and after hospital staff tried to revive the newborn and failed, they declared the child dead.
After the baby was covered with a sheet, two police officers were tasked with waiting with the child until the coroner arrived. While waiting nearly two hours, one of the police officers noticed movement under the sheet. It turns out the child was still alive!
The officer felt a pulse and now the child is in stable condition along with her mother. According to experts, the freezing temperatures could have slowed the child's heart to the point of nearly stopping, while still retaining brain function.
This is a miraculous story of hope after a baby was believed to be dead. Imagine your mother telling you this story when you grow up. However, there have to be some concerns regarding the hospital pronouncing the child dead.
I understand the freezing temperatures may have slowed the child's heart and the child may have seemed dead, but don't you exhaust all options before actually declaring the baby dead?
According to the hospital that treated the child, it's reviewing "all aspects of care" as well as looking into the "extensive resuscitation efforts" when the baby was brought into the hospital. Maybe nurses and doctors did do everything they could and this was a freak incident where there was no way hospital personnel could tell that the child was still alive. However, at the very least, maybe the hospital can learn from this incident and put in new protocol to make sure they never declare a patient dead before there heart stops.
