Reports confirm that a heroic 4-year-old girl pulled her little sister out of a tragic car wreck in Washington State on Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 20). The young girls' mother died in the violent wreck, and the sisters were left stranded in the rain for six hours until help arrived. Police claim that if the 4-year-old hadn't removed her younger sister from the vehicle and covered them both up with blankets, neither was likely to have survived. Both girls were injured in the crash, and promptly transported to the hospital.

According to state troopers, the wreck happened in a remote area of Washington along the Pacific Coast at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday. A passing vehicle didn't notice the girls shivering hurt in the rain until about 8 - 8:30 a.m. The driver only initially stopped because he saw the recently damaged tree that the car had barreled into.

Kraai McClure, the driver who picked up the girls, told King 5 News, "I just can't imagine what the little girls were going through. It could have been a really different ending, but it is, you know, a halfway happy ending."

The names of the two sisters have not been released, but the Seattle Times confirms that the girls' 26-year-old mother Jessica Rath was on her way to pick up her husband (a fisherman) along the Pacific Coast at the time the crash occurred. The husband allegedly called to inform Rath that his boat would be docking at Portland, Oregon instead, and that the she and the girls should turn back. Rath decided to drive on to Portland anyway.

Officers claim that Rath probably fell asleep at the wheel when her vehicle crashed violently into a tree. She was killed instantly. After the crash, the 4-year-old girl pulled her injured younger sister from the car, and had them both huddle up together under blankets until help arrived.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Russ Winger told the Times, "We're lucky we had someone paying attention or we may not have found them for a long time. Hypothermia could have set in if they were found any later."

Both girls were taken to a hospital in Astoria, OR. Troopers report that the 2-year-old, who was seriously injured, was later flown to Portland.
