In an emotional return to the Dancing with the Stars dance floor, Paris train hero and American Oregon Army National Guardsman specialist Alek Skarlatos honored his Oregon college town that was recently victim of a mass killing spree.

Skarlatos was invited to join the DWTS cast following his heroic success in stopping a terrorist attack on a train headed toward Paris this past August. While Skarlatos was out of town for DWTS rehearsal in Los Angeles, California, a shooter killed nine people at Umpqua Community College. After hearing news of the school tragedy, Skarlatos left for Roseburg, Oregon.

In a pre-taped segment in Monday's episode, Skarlatos shared how heartbroken he felt. "Once I found out about the shooting, I just started calling all my friends and family. I felt totally hopeless. Like there was nothing I could do," he said. "I just felt like I needed to get home as fast as I could."

Monday night's show recalled on DWTS cast members' most memorable years. Competitors used last night's dance routine to draw on heartfelt memories, life-changing moments and flashback fun.

Bindi Irwin chose to commemorate her father, Steve Irwin, who died from a stingray attack in 2006. Accompanied by her partner, Derek Hough, Irwin glided across the dancefloor in a contemporary routine to "Every Breath You Take" by Aaron Krause.

Social media star, Hayes Grier, celebrated his first viral video from 2014. Grier and his partner, Emma Slater's contemporary routine to "Stitches" by Shawn Mendes left DWTS judge Bruno Tonioli with a jaw-dropping look on his face.

Tonioli shared what may have been the most shocking memory of the night. In 1983, he appeared in Elton John's video, "I'm Still Standing," wearing only black underwear, a studded belt and a black chauffeur's hat.
