Mexico's most wanted drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, may be dead according to Guatemalan authorities who launched a search Friday morning after residents reported a gun battle between drug gangs.

Despite reports that "El Chapo" could be dead, officials stressed that no bodies had been found and they are still searching. Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla told the Associate Press that police and soldiers are searching on foot in the Peten province, near the border of Mexico, in addition to government planes flying over the area where residents reported a gun battle taking place.

According to what Government spokesman Francisco Cuevas told a Mexican television station, at least two men had died and they are still waiting to see if one of the dead bodies, is in fact, the body of "El Chapo." Cuevas later told Mexico's Televisa network that they have not found any bodies, which of course contradicts his earlier statement.

There are conflicting reports right now and what seems to be a lot of rumors.

Interior Department spokeswoman Carla Herrera told the AP that one of the victims physically resembled the drug lord and that officials asked the Mexican government to send the drug lord's fingerprints so they could be compared to the man they found.

This goes against what Lopez Bonilla (Herrera's boss) had told the AP, that it was a resident who reported seeing a person killed who resembled "El Chapo."

Bonilla said, "The fact is we don't have any of this information confirmed."

It seems for now, it is all pure speculation. However, with numerous reports of a shootout occurring and people seeing the drug lord's dead body, there may be something to the story.

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is considered one of the world's most dangerous fugitives as well as being one of the richest. According to Forbes, he is worth nearly $1 billion. Guzman has been in hiding since 2001 when he escaped from a Mexican prison.
