Kendrick Lamar shares his music video for his song "Poetic Justice" featuring Drake off of his last year's record good kid, m.A.A.d city. Lamar originally intended for Janet Jackson, whose 1993 single "Any Time, Any Place" is being sampled in the song, for the music video and openly asked her on MTV to join the project. Apparently she did not want to be a part of the music video and instead we are treated to a beautifully visual tale of love and murder.

The video opens with the disclaimer, ""All characters in this visual are entirely fictional. The events that occur are purely symbolic and should not be taken literal." We are then taken into somewhat of a scene out of an early 1990s inner city youth crime drama a la Higher Learning or (of course) Poetic Justice. Lamar definitely draws succinct parallels between his lyrics and the video visuals and the film the song is named after. "Love" is portrayed in the two lovers, who have their tale cut short by "Enemigo" and a gun.

As the video progresses, Drake raps his verse while trying to get in contact with his fallen friend. A scantily clad woman lying on his bed accompanies him. Drake raps his complimentary lyrics in her ear, all the while aggravated by the fact that his phone call is going unnoticed.

The video concludes with the reveal of the dead bodies and the text "love hurts" across the screen. One on top of the other, Kendrick was too late to save his lover or himself. The camera zooms in and out on the tragic scene as Kendrick raps his last verse. With the last chorus coming in one last time, the tape seemingly skips and slows, allowing us to see the happy beginning of the story when the lovers first lock eyes.

It is kind of unfortunate that Janet Jackson did not star in this video as Kendrick hoped. In December he pitched the idea to MTV cameras during an interview, saying, "Janet, c'mon, Janet. No paperwork with the managers, contact the managers. This is artist to artist. This is a young boy that looked up to you for years. Please, yeah, video, Janet Jackson 'Poetic Justice.' It'll only be right." Lamar said shortly after that Jackson was in contact with him thanks to the plea, but it looks like nothing came from it. Having her in the video would have been great and would have really added to the overall attitude. Fortunately the music video for "Poetic Justice" turned out to be amazing and will surely be a milestone in Lamar's career.
