A man dragged and hacked into his wife's head and face with a meat cleaver in New York city during broad daylight. A 23-year-old wife was attacked by her 28-year-old husband in Manhattan across the street from a firehouse. The incident occurred around 10:20am on Sunday on Canal Street in Chinatown. Fortunately, firefighters that were stationed across the street came to the woman's rescue and detained the suspect.

Firefighters of FDNY Engine Company 9 heard the horrific screams from the public and victim and witnessed the man dragging his wife by her hair and attacking her with the meat cleaver.

Firefight Jose Ortiz says that the woman tried to fight the man off of her when he approached the suspect and intervened. According to the New York Daily News, the 18-year veteran said that's when the man pulled out a meat cleaver from his waistband and struck the woman in the face and head. The firefighter revisited the horrific scene, "He was not a big guy, only about 5-foot-5, but the cleaver made him a little taller," Ortiz said. Both Shane Clarke and Jim Trainor -colleagues of Ortiz- along with a policeman held down the crazed man.

While the suspect was be reprehended, the woman tried to flee the scene, "She bolts. Shane follows her, because I told him, 'You've got to follow the lady, because she's hurt,'" Ortiz said. They eventually caught up with the injured woman who appeared shaken up by the event and was later taken to Bellevue hospital after sustaining non life-threatening lacerations to her face, back, and hip. The suspect was later arrested.

The FDNY men who responded and practically saved the woman's life say that may be the 2nd horrific, craziest thing they've ever seen, "Besides the World Trade Center," Clarke said, "this was the craziest thing I've ever seen."
