New York City police are currently investigating a bizarre shooting which took place in Brooklyn in the middle of the night on Saturday (Feb. 23). According to reports, 79-year-old James 'Tyrone' Jackson was shot in the neck and killed by an unidentified shooter - the elder's unresponsive body was eventually discovered by his alleged blind girlfriend/wife in the bedroom of his Bushwick apartment at around 2:25 a.m. (Feb. 24).  Police confirm that the unnamed lover is not a suspect in the shooting - while the case is currently under investigation, law enforcement believe that Jackson may have fallen victim to a stray round of nearby bullets.

Reports confirm that Jackson's blind live-in girlfriend (sometimes referred to as his wife) did not realize that the elderly man had been shot in the neck when she went to check on him early Sunday morning. When she finally realized that Jackson was unresponsive, she promptly called a neighbor for help. The responding neighbor (simply referred to as Joyce), told CBS:

"She said, 'Joyce could you come down here, I can't wake up Tyrone', he was lying in the couch in a puddle of blood. She said she couldn't wake him up ... He was lying on the couch slumped over. It's horrible."

The neighbor quickly called 911 and police responded to the scene. Jackson was rushed to the local Woodhull Medical Center, and later pronounced dead. According to law enforcement, the 79-year-old man may have been shot several hours prior to being discovered. Another shaken-up neighbor tells CBS, "I went last night to get a cigarette from him so I knocked on the door, but I didn't get no answer."

Joyce explains that Jackson's girlfriend/wife didn't hear or notice anything suspicious prior to the shooting - "She wears a hearing aid, and when she goes to bed she don't have her hearing aid on,

Several other neighbors and the apartment building's super insist that they didn't see any signs of a forced entry or break-in.

Although Jackson had nine prior arrests leading up to his death (including charges of drugs and forgery), police sources confirm that they're still not sure if the elder was an intended target of the fatal shooting. They're still unsure where the shot was actually fired from and if there was a motive - an investigation is currently underway.

According to another neighbor, Jackson's blind lover was completely devastated by the fatal shooting and "doesn't know what she's going to do now without him."

Jackson, who enjoyed sitting on the building's stoop during warm summer days and was known for selling cigarettes to friends and neighbors, "was a good person," said neighbor Eric Turner, 47. "If you needed something, he'd always give it to you."

Thoughts and condolences go out to Jackson's family, friends, and neighbors during this time of tragedy.
