They Might Be Giants, aka everyone's favorite nerd-rockers, aka the soundtrack to your college experience if you went to school in the early 90s, are back with a new single off their upcoming album Nanobots entitled "You're on Fire."
This new release sounds like classic They Might Be Giants, mixing the weird lyrics and surrealism of their earlier records with the stomping pop of their later years (particularly their children's music albums. If you've never rocked out to "I am a Paleontologist", then you haven't lived, friend).
The song appears to be about casually letting a stranger know that their head is engulfed in flames, which just might be the single most They Might Be Giants-y subject ever. (Choice line: "You must've got one of those combustible heads" and the later backing refrain of "Combustible heeeaaaad! Combustible heeeaaad!")
The video consists of old grainy footage of people lighting fires, a fire swallower, children on bikes, black and white cartoons, men in monkey masks (you know, the usual) and can viewed in its entirety below.
This track sounds like its hit the sweet spot between uber-weird They Might Be Giants and listener-friendly, pop-sensible TMBG. This bodes well for the as yet unreleased Nanobots, which hits stores next Tuesday, March 5.
What do you think? Do you prefer power pop TMBG? Will you be picking up a copy of Nanobots?
