Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh pop singer best known for her 1983 hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart," will be a representative for the UK at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest. For those who aren't familiar, Eurovision is a European song competition held annually involving the active members of the European Broadcasting Union or EBU.
Each country in the competition picks a song that will be performed on live television and radio, then voted on to determine the most popular song. The competition has taken place every year since 1956 and is enormously popular worldwide. Eurovision is one of the longest running television programs in the world and also one of the most watched non-sporting events in the world.
Tyler was chosen to perform the song "Believe in Me," in front over 100 million viewers in Malmo, Sweden on May 18. That seems like a lot of pressure, even for a 61-year-old, seasoned performer. In a statement Tyler said, "I promise to give this everything that I've got for the UK!" Tyler went on to say, "I am truly honoured and delighted to be able to represent my country at Eurovision, and especially with such a fabulous song."
The entry last year for the UK was Engelbert Humperdinck, who finished second to last with 12 points. The last time a representative from England won the competition was in 1997 when Katrina and the Waves scored 227 points for their song "Love Shine a Light." Overall, the UK has won the competition a total of five times since entering back in 1959.
The song Tyler will be performing was written by songwriters Desmond Child, Lauren Christy, and Christopher Braide. Child has quite the resume, working with bands such as Bon Jovi and Kiss. Child also wrote Ricky Martin hits "She Bangs" and "Livin' La Vida Loca."
What do you think of "Believe in Me?" Good enough to win the contest?
