It's been seven years since the Edward Norton-led The Incredible Hulk came out in theaters, but since 2012's The Avengers, it's been Mark Ruffalo owning the role of Bruce Banner like nobody's business on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So how high are the chances of the character getting its own stand-alone film?

Not very, it would seem. The 48-year-old actor, who's currently nominated for a Golden Globe for his work on Infinitely Polar Bear, recently spoke to Yahoo! about the chances the popular character getting his own movie, and it appears as though Marvel and Universal would have work through a lot to make that happen.

"I know for a fact that everyone is holding out hope that one day we can do it. But the nature of the relationship right now, it's a little prohibitive," Ruffalo told the site about Marvel and Disney's relationship towards making a sequel. "And I hope that that changes, that changes with regimes, it changes over the course of time. But right now it doesn't look particularly promising."

The problem began in 2003, when Universal released Hulk, directed by Ang Lee and starring Eric Bana, a film that ultimately gave them the right to have a say in any portrayals of the character on the big screen. After a while, since Universal didn't make a sequel, it was easier to make the film starring Norton, but that doesn't mean the studio has relinquished all rights to the material.

Hulk will be one of the few characters in the MCU that won't appear in next year's Captain America: Civil War, though it has been recently announced that Ruffalo will be on Thor: Ragnarok, which has prompted all kinds of speculation.

Earlier this week, Ruffalo told Ain't It Cool News that Banner and Hulk's struggle might be seen more in the Chris Hemsworth-led film ... unfortunately, fans will have to wait until summer 2017 to know for sure!
