Finally, the Summer of 2016 will mark Matt Damon's comeback as Jason Bourne after a 9-year absence from the films. Though the character has been missing since 2004 in the universe, his return is all the more impressive – and we'll find him in a "dark and tortured place."

Damon recently did an interview with Entertainment Weekly, as the outlet released rare information on the movie, which is set 12 years after the events that transpired in The Bourne Ultimatum.

"There's been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties," Damon explained the magazine about what has happened in Bourne's universe (as well as the real one) since the character last appeared. "We find him in a dark and tortured place."

Little is known about the Bourne 5 project, a film that doesn't even have an official name yet, and there's still no teaser or trailer, even though the high profile sequel is set for a July 2016 release.

In the little information that's been provided of the film, fans know that Julia Stiles will be reprising her role as Nicky, BGR reports. New cast members will include Ex Machina and The Danish Girl actress Alicia Vikander also joining in as a cyberspecialist as well as Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones playing a "hardened CIA agent" in a role that sounds right up his alley.

Black Swan actor Vicent Cassel has also joined the cast in an unspecified role.

Damon has had a big year, having starred in the widely popular Ridley Scott space film The Martian, where he plays an astronaut from a not too distant future who gets stranded in a mission in the neighboring planet and must survive in the months until NASA can come rescue him. His performance in the film has already earned him a Golden Globe nomination and he might be on the road for an Oscar nod as well.
