You've probably called trash-pop diva extraordinaire Ke$ha many things since her emergence onto the pop scene. But I sincerely doubt that "friend of animals" comes to mind. Apparently, the "Die Young" singer is just that as she's receiving an award from the Humane Society for animal activism. Who knew?

Ke$ha has been the Humane Society's global ambassador ever since news got out of a trip she took to the South Pacific. On an island there, she saw two dogs glued  together in the street and attempted to save them, getting scabies in the process.

I was calling the Humane Society in the middle of the night and nobody was answering," Ke$ha recalled in an interview with Billboard. "I bitched about it to enough people that they ended up sending a whole help team of volunteers."

The Humane society created the position of global ambassador just to bestow it upon Ke$ha (so she'll go into the history books for more than just questionable alcohol-related teeth hygiene) and now they are honoring her with the Wyler Award, which is meant to celebrate activism on the part of animals.

"She's always willing to speak out and lend her name and voice for issues we're addressing at the time," says Beverly Kaskey, senior director of the HSUS' Hollywood outreach program. "She has such a wide international reach."

Ke$ha will receive the award during the United States Genesis Awards event in Los Angeles on March 23.

"If you follow my music, you know I'm a bit of a jackass," Ke$ha told Billboard. "But this is one part of my life I take really seriously. Helping animals has always been my goal."

Past recipients include Paul McCartney, Ellen DeGeneres and Kristen Davis.

Ke$ha often speaks out on behalf of abused animals via her Facebook and Twitter profiles and has recorded several PSAs for the Humane Society.
