'Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's' Rachel Bloom Wins Golden Globe for Best Actress

Rachel Bloom has won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Comedy Series for her starring role in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. It was the first nomination and win for the 28-year-old actress who was definitely the dark horse going into the ceremony as her fellow nominees were all previous Golden Globe, Emmy and Oscar winners. Her competition included Jamie Lee Curtis, nominated for Scream Queens, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, nominated for Veep, Lily Tomlin, nominated for Grace and Frankie and last year's winner and fellow CW star Gina Rodriguez, nominated for Jane the Virgin.

After Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Andy Samberg announced her name, a shocked Bloom took the stage and gave a tearful speech.

"We almost didn't have a show. We made a pilot for another network and they rejected it.  We got six rejections in one day and we felt like crap but we knew it was good. Mark Pedowitz from The CW picked it out, and he's the one who saved us."

Bloom then praised her co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna, who "saw my YouTube videos and two and a half years later I'm standing on this stage with a Golden Globe."

Later in the press room, Bloom claimed, "The CW has supported us creatively every single step of the way. It sounds weird, but we actually look forward to getting network notes."

In the only musical comedy currently on television, Bloom's title character, Rebecca Bunch, abandons her big legal job in New York to follow a childhood romance with her ex-boyfriend who lives in California. Each episode contains several professionally choreographed song and dance numbers that help move the action of the plot in a comedic way. It was initially shot as a half-hour sitcom for Showtime but eventually found a home on the CW where it was expanded to an hour to capitalize on its unique format.

Bloom, who not only stars, but writes and produces Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, previously appeared in episodes of Robot Chicken as well as various other TV shows and short films. However, it was her aforementioned YouTube videos that gave her the exposure that got her noticed. Since 2010 her channel has over 50,000 subscribers and over 12 million views. In an interview with EW, Bloom said, "I used to think there was some secret password to the clubhouse of success that everyone knew, but it's really just being a decent person and hard work."
