Manchester United took on Premier League bottom feeders Newcastle United. It was pegged to be a real yawn-fest. Not because United would run away with it, but because both teams have been struggling for goals. However, that wasn't the case on Tuesday. The game turned into a real thriller. There was drama, excitement and goals -- some pretty spectacular goals, too--cough, cough, Wayne Rooney. Ultimately, though, United would squander a lead not once, but twice, as Newcastle was able to equalize in the dying minutes of the game to steal a share of the points.

Manchester United looked to be in cruise control after taking a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. But 4 minutes before halftime, Newcastle were able to cut the deficit in half with a well taken goal by Georginio Wijnaldum. Some 15 minutes later and Newcastle completed the comeback after Aleksandar Mitrovic calmly converted a penalty kick. 11 minutes from time, however, Manchester United looked to seal the 3 points with a spectacular goal from Wayne Rooney (vintage Rooney, really), but a poor clearance in the dying minutes of the game allowed Newcastle's Paul Dummett to blast in an equalizer from the edge of the box.

The knock on Manchester United all year long has been aimed at their lack of goal scoring. Which, on Tuesday, appeared to be a non-issue. They were great, counterattacking with real purpose, looking dangerous in the final third. This was a far cry from the team who has only scored 24 goals in 20 games. Surprisingly, it was the stout defense that let them down. The aspect that they have largely excelled at all year long. It's ironic that when the offense finally clicks, their defense collapses entirely. But credit to Newcastle for their resilience.

The result puts Manchester United in 6th place, a point behind West Ham United and 2 points behind Tottenham in 4th place, according to bbc.com. Newcastle, meanwhile, earned a much needed point, but still find themselves 1 point shy of being safe from the relegation zone.
