Fans might still be offering their signatures to the petition to bring George Lucas back to direct Star Wars Episode IX, but the film's current director Colin Trevorrow is certainly unfazed by the news. As a matter of fact, the Jurassic World director is still looking forward to working on the third film in the new Star Wars trilogy and has just offered some new details about the movie.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Trevorrow revealed that Episode IX will cover everything that happened from Episode I: The Phantom Menace until the still untitled Episode VIII.

"By the time we get to Episode IX, I look at that movie as one movie, as three movies, as six movies, and as nine movies," Trevorrow said. "It's something that needs to honor a story that has been told over a period of 40 years."

The Safety Not Guaranteed director also confirmed that he is very much in tune with the franchise and is giving it a serious treatment.

"Star Wars is a belief system, it's not just a story and it's not just a movie, and it's something I take very seriously," he said.

There is no doubt that the biggest Star Wars mystery of the moment is Rey's origin story. Daisy Ridley's character certainly has a mysterious past, but Trevorrow admitted that he knows who her parents are, and the answer will be something that fans will truly appreciate.

"We're going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying," he said. "Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy. She deserves it. We'll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we're just telling you what happened."

It certainly sounds like Rey is a major part in the Star Wars mythos, not just as a possible Skywalker child, but as the fabled Chosen One who will finally bring balance to the Force.

Although there are not enough details to confirm the speculation, Trevorrow's statements are certainly enough to get fans excited over the future of the new Star Wars trilogy.

Star Wars Episode IX is scheduled for release in 2019.
