Fresh off his Golden Globe win for The Revenant on Sunday, Leonardo DiCaprio has received an Academy Award nomination for the same role. The announcement was made in Hollywood at 5:30 a.m. by actor John Krasinski and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. This makes the fifth acting Oscar nod for the 41-year-old star and most believe this is his year to break the losing streak.

Although the news this morning was not a total surprise, many believe DiCaprio has been snubbed of nominations in the past, most notably for his performances in Titanic, Catch Me If You Can and The Departed. His first opportunity at the golden statue was back in 1994 for his supporting role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. In 2005 he would get a chance at Best Actor for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in Martin Scorcese's The Aviator. Another Best Actor nod would come in 2007 for Blood Diamond and again in 2014 for The Wolf of Wall Street.

For the latter, DiCaprio also received a nod for Best Picture as he was one of its producers.

However, DiCaprio has stated that his role as trapper Hugh Glass in Alejandro Inarritu's wilderness epic has been the hardest of his career. Obviously after seeing his performance, which included eating raw bison liver, wading through icy water, which resulted in a flu infection and an all too real bear attack, most would agree he is the frontrunner. Of course the fact that he's already won the Golden Globe is usually a good sign, but such was not the case for his previous wins in The Wolf of Wall Street and The Aviator.

Ironically, DiCaprio's Titanic co-star Kate Winslet, who also won a Golden Globe this year, won her first Oscar on her fifth nomination, so perhaps that will be a more encouraging indicator for The Great Gatsby star.

The 88th Academy Awards will be hosted by Chris Rock and broadcast on ABC on February 28th.  Break a leg, Leo!
