Supernatural returns for more Season 11 episodes on Wednesday, January 20, but what's next for Sam and Dean Winchester? We've got some spoilers ahead on that subject, so read on to find out the news.

Showrunner Jeremy Carver spoke to TVLine as part of the site's Winter TV Preview and revealed that there would be "some fairly shocking turns right from the jump" when the show gets back on the air.

Perhaps the most interesting of those twists is the news that Sam (Jared Padalecki) will seriously and truly consider Lucifer's offer to once again become his vessel. At the end of the midseason finale, Lucifer (guest star Mark Pellegrino) revealed that he had tricked Sam through a series of visions into returning to the cage, where the two are now trapped together.

It seems that the only way for Sam to get out of there now is to join up with Lucifer, which could have some serious implications going forward.

Dean (Jensen Ackles), meanwhile, is dealing with some issues of his own, specifically with regard to Amara aka The Darkness, with whom he has a connection. The elder Winchester brother will wrestle with the question of if he has "the strength to admit to himself the hold that [Amara] has on him and admit this to others," Carver said. "Him doing that is going to lead to some pretty interesting results."

Castiel (Misha Collins) has spent a significant portion of this season watching Netflix, but Carver promises that everyone's favorite angel will return "in new and unexpected ways." Part of that is his mission to get his powers back on track, but this will lead to some "startling consequences" for everyone involved.

And lastly, there is the question of God, who still has not arrived on the series despite the threat of his sister, The Darkness. "The idea of God and, 'Where is God? Will God show himself?'...will be heavily debated," Carver said.
