As production for the Warner/DC film, Wonder Woman, continues to move forward, one vital character has joined the cast. Gladiator star Connie Nielsen has just landed the role of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons and Diana Prince's mother, in the Gal Gadot-starring superhero film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 50-year-old Nielsen, Danish by birth although she's located the better part of her career in Hollywood, has landed the role of the Amazon royal in the comic book adaptation. She joins a cast that includes Gadot (who will début as Wonder Woman in this year's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine in the role of Steve Trevor, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, Ewan Bremmer and David Thewlis.

At least part of the film will be set during World War I, with Pine seemingly playing Trevor as well as his grandfather in the film.

Nielsen has worked in a variety of projects over her career, from roles in large mainstream films like Gladiator and The Devil's Advocate to roles in independent cinema such as Lars von Trier's controversial Nymphomaniac. Most recently, Nielsen played Ramona Lytton in The Good Wife.

Variety reports that Warner had initially considered Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman for the role of Hippolyta, but that was ultimately scraped when her schedule conflicted with her upcoming HBO series, Big Little Lies. When Wright was cast, it was initially thought she'd be playing the role, but it appears she's been cast as Diana's aunt instead.

In the Wonder Woman comic books, Hippolyta's personality has changed quite a bit, from loving and cautious to a more adventurous version where she was even the first Wonder Woman. Seeing as it's unclear what kind of back story the superheroine will have in the DC Cinematic Universe, it's unclear how the role of Hippolyta will be presented at all.

Currently, Wonder Woman is shooting on location between France, Italy and the United Kingdom, though the movie won't be in theaters until June 23, 2017.
