Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his infinite wisdom, which helped kick off the civil rights moment in America. Because of the inspiration he spread unto the denizens of our country—sure, some later than others—the United States grew in leaps in terms of both acceptance and existence. With this in mind, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with five of our favorite quotes from the activist.

1. "One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws."

According to a report from Mashable, Dr. King was arrested just about 30 times throughout his life, all of which through nonviolence. But even still, he pushed the line and broke down barriers in order to fight for what he believed was humanly decent.

2. "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

Dr. King understood the importance of doing things for others, which is why this quote stands out so strongly. It is our duty as human beings to be kind, to be generous and to be decent to one another. Should we fail to do so, we're merely existing.

3. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Sure, this quote might be a tad overused, but seriously, how much more powerful can a quote get?

4. "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

It's easy to go through life forever being comfortable. But it is during challenging times when we see our true selves.

5. "I Have a Dream"

And by "I Have a Dream," we mean everything Dr. King said in his "I Have a Dream" speech. If you haven't heard it, please take a listen. The words are wonderful but the drive and emotion behind the words are what also make the man worthy of celebration and admiration.
