Tika Sumpter Discusses 'Southside with You' Film About Barack & Michelle Obama's First Date

Get a glimpse into the greatest love story of all time with the new film Southside with You, centered around Barack and Michelle Obama. Southside With You stars Tika Sumpter, who plays Michelle, and Parker Sawyers as Barack Obama. The film tells the story of the couple's first date back in Chicago where their romance began.

Long before the two took on the world by storm as POTUS and FLOTUS, Barack Obama spent weeks courting the apple of his eye, Michelle Robinson, until she finally gave him a shot. The new film details the story of the First Couple's initial date written and will debut at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24.

Written and directed by Richard Tanne, Southside With You is set in 1989, when the young attorney, played by Sumpter, reluctantly accepts a date from her summer associate, Barack. Michelle gives a long list of reasons why the two shouldn't date like, "How's it gonna look if I just swoop in and start dating the first cute black guy who walks through the firm's doors?"

The witty young Obama replies, "So you think I'm cute?" as he continues to work his charm.

Sumpter explained to E! Online that landing the role as Michelle Obama was an amazing accomplishment especially because of how the story is written.

"The perspective is so different...It's an honor and at the same time it's also scary because you're like 'they're gonna see this.'" said Sumpter, "It's an honor to do it, I feel like it's kind of...it's perfect they're leaving the White House... it's almost a gift."
