Jay Z Entangled in a Lawsuit: Roc Nation Exec Battles Parlux Over Perfume

Entertainment magnet and Roc Nation head, Shawn "Jay Z" Carter has managed to entangle himself in a web of a problem, causing Parlux to file a lawsuit! According to NY Daily News, the lawsuit that was filed on Tuesday accuses The Blue Print rapper of "breaking written promises to promote his own signature fragrance, Gold Jay Z."

What led to this suit being filed in Manhattan Supreme Court is simple: from 2013 until now, Carter allegedly should have made six promotional appearances including appearances on Good Morning America and at Macy's, an exclusive in top fashion magazine, Women's Wear Daily, and even social media posts. They are said to have all been declined by the hip hop mogul.

You would think Shawn Carter would put in the effort to promote a fragrance line that paid him an advance of $2 million royalty fee, especially since Parlux Fragrances, who's responsible for licensing, marketing and design, has paid Jacob "The Jeweler" Arabo to create "five prototypes of lavish perfume bottles for the fragrance. Each one had solid gold caps and gold drizzle on the exterior. They cost $20,000 each," says Parlux's attorney Anthony Viola in court documents.

Who dropped the ball on Roc Nation's president's line? It seems the blame is being placed on a person the New York Daily News describes as "Carter's business manager, Desiree Perez." She is said to have been "in Miami to present ideas, potential off-shoot fragrances and private collections," but they never got "any substantive feedback from Jay Z or his management team." The media outlet also claims, "In October 2014, they sent 'bottles, cartons and fragrance juices' to Perez for Gold Jay Z Noir, Gold Jay Z Parish Lights, and Gold Jay Z London Underground. At her request, they changed the color of some of the boxes but Carter still hasn't signed off on the products, court papers say."

This can get messier and it seems like the perfume company is not willing to lose the money that they fronted Jay Z. In fact, they'd like not only their $2 million back, but also want $18 million in compensatory damages, their 300,000 shares of stock back from Perfumania and their contract with the rapper voided.

You are probably already aware of who Jay Z is, so the million dollar question is who exactly is Parlux? Let's start with it being a publicly traded company that specializes in celebrity perfumes. Women's Wear Daily reported that some of their biggest perfume brands are linked with Paris Hilton, Pitbull, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Simpson and Roc Nation's Rihanna.
