Verdine who was also a member of the 70s hit band told the Associated Press, "My brother, hero and best friend Maurice White passed away peacefully last night in his sleep. Before he died, White had revealed that he was suffering from Parkinson's around the time the band was inducted into the Hall of Fame. White struggled with symptoms since the 1980s. He retired from touring with the band in 1995 because of fatigue from the road and his growing health problems.

After learning that White had died, actor Chris Rock mourned his death and tweeted, "You can't hide love."

Gospel singer Kirk Franklin added a video of White appearing in one of his music videos where he remade the hit song, "September."
