Plus-size Model Ashley Graham Deemed Sports Illustrated's 2016 "Rookie Of The Year"

Fashion is starting to take a turn for the better when it comes to the body standard department. Ashley Graham, the Nebraska native who has changed the stigma of how models look has taken off in the modeling world. The 28-year-old has been bestowed the honor of being Sports Illustrated "Rookie Of The Year."  

The size 14 model has definitely broken down barriers within the industry that at one point only casted models who were thin. Sports Illustrated in the past has had models that fit the traditional mold on the cover. However, Graham is now one of the few full-figured model to grace the magazine.

The 28-year-old activist/supermodel announced the news today on her Instagram page. Graham posted an image from her cover shoot, expressing her excitement while standing for women with curves. " It's official- I'm a @si_swimsuit model!! This is a dream come true," the model wrote. "Thank you to everyone who stood up for curves-our voices were heard and together we can help me win Rookie of the Year. Stay tuned for voting instructions #beautybeyondsize @siswim."


Graham was first discovered at the age of 12 at a mall in her hometown. The beauty that we can see is model material stands out from the typical models with her curvaceous body. The model has worked her way up in the industry and has truly made her mark. A founding member of ALDA, which is an organization of models whose mission is to empower women and change the stigma of beauty, the supermodel is all about changing the industry.

The supermodel is currently the face of Forever 21's plus-size activewear line and designs a popular lingerie line for the Canadian retailer, Addition Elle.

With Sports Illustrated moving into the direction of featuring more body positive images, it is only a matter of time before the rest of the fashion industry takes note.
