Telenovela star Eva Longoria joins a new campaign for Oscar night: wear brown ribbons to support diversity, particularly when it comes to Latinos.

In the month since the Academy Awards 2016 nominations were announced, there has been a lot of tension in Hollywood as there were no people of color nominated in the acting categories, prompting a call for boycott.

In the past, stars in big award shows have given their support to various causes by wearing ribbons of one color or another and, on last year's Golden Globes, there was also a movement to support the victims of the Charlie Hebdo attacks, with people like George Clooney wearing buttons with the words "Je Suis Charlie."

This year, with diversity (and lack thereof) being the main subject of conversation, it's no surprise celebrities are rallying up people for that cause.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Desperate Housewives alum will be joining the #brownribbon campaign, which has a goal of raising awareness of the lack of Latino representation in the film industry, a subject Longoria has been very vocal about in the past. There are a couple of hashtags too, if you're looking to join the initiative: #HollywoodBrownout and #BrownRibbonCampaign.

This week, The New York Times unveiled an interactive project entitled "What It's Really Like to Work in Hollywood* (*If you're not a straight white man)," and Longoria spoke about her own experience starting out in Hollywood as a woman of Latin descent.

"Some white male casting director was dictating what it meant to be Latin," Longoria told the outlet. "He decided I needed an accent. He decided I should [have] darker-colored skin. The gatekeepers are not usually people of color, so they don't understand you should be looking for way more colors of the rainbow within that one ethnicity."

Longoria has a master's degree in Chicano Studies and has been very vocal about working towards better immigration policies.
