After years of negotiations, Spider-Man is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe this spring, on Captain America: Civil War, followed by a stand-alone film out in 2017 and starring Tom Holland. However, one actor from the first movie adaptations is getting a lot of buzz. There's a new Internet petition demanding Whiplash Oscar winner J.K. Simmons to reprise his role as J.Jonah Jameson.

Oscar Tsui from the United Kingdom created a Change.org petition trying to collect 2,500 signatures so Disney would agree to cast Simmons in the role once again for the new reboot. At the time this story was written, 2,310 had signed to have Simmons return as Peter Parker's boss at the Daily Bugle.

Whatever you might think about the original Spidey trilogy starring Tobey Maguire in the title role, comic book and movie fans alike agree that one casting choice was downright perfect; Simmons in the role of J. Jonah Jameson, Peter Parker's boss. The character actor played Jameson in all three Sam Raimi films and he's continued to voice the character in numerous animated versions -- but, unfortunately, it's not up to him whether to reprise the role in the big screen or not.

Entertainment Tonight spoke with the Oscar winner last weekend at the Independent Film Awards, asking whether he'd be up to play the role one more times. Revealing he'd "never close the door" on playing the Marvel character, Simmons reminded everyone that an online petition wouldn't really do much in the eyes of the Disney people.

"That petition does not come from anybody that is actually in a position to do anything about it," the actor said, breaking the hearts of fans as much as he broke Peter Parker's when he laughed at him in his face.

Peter Parker doesn't meet Jameson until he works for his newspaper as the official Spidey photographer, and the new version of the character's only discovering his powers in high school. So there might still be a little time until Disney finds the perfect actor to play the role. Still, how great would it be to have Simmons back?
