The most recent episode of HBO's Girls is the most focused on relationships since the show began its run, and the way things are evolving for the cast on S05E03 is downright fascinating. In this "Old Loves" recap with spoilers, Jessa and Adam finally give in to their feelings, Hannah begins her trip down Self-Sabotage-land, and Marnie reaches an epiphany in her marriage.

After getting a glimpse of Shoshannah Shapiro (Zosia Mamet) and her thriving life in Japan, it's time to get back to New York City this time around.

At the start of the episode, Hannah (Lena Dunham) is at home grading some papers, and her boyfriend, Fran (Jake Lacy), grabs some and decides to correct the students' spelling and grammar errors. Even though she explicitly tells him the assignment isn't about that. Still, he completely ignores her and begins stepping on her work, which understandably annoys her, and they fight over one of the papers -- and they tear it apart.

While Hannah had a point at the beginning, she still does her usual thing and takes it to the extreme. Once it's time for her to give the students back her papers, the girl who wrote the torn paper asks her what happened, which prompts Hannah to get Fran out of class, so he can explain to Maile (Nicole Alexander) what happened.

Of course, that just means Hannah makes a scene and starts yelling in a school hallway, making Maile (it's pronounced Miley) cry and annoying Fran.

By the end of the episode, the two sit silently correcting papers at their apartment. And it doesn't seem like they're going to last very long.

In the meantime, Jessa (Jemima Kirke) has been avoiding Adam (Adam Driver) for a while, as things have gotten increasingly awkward between them. Finally, he shows up at her AA meeting and confronts her, telling her what we all know to be true. Iif the tables were turned, Hannah wouldn't have the same considerations she's having, because she's the most self-absorbed being on the planet.

Later, Jessa's trying to study and she gets a full house all of a sudden: Hannah and Marnie (Allison Williams), both of who are complaining about their relationships, as Marnie had just come home to find her husband, Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) building a giant wall in the middle of their apartment without consulting her.

As Jessa is visibly annoyed her friends barged in to talk about themselves, Marnie has an uncharacteristic epiphany: she's the one building a wall in her marriage, as her husband's trying to make a home for the two and she's pushing him back. She gets back home to Desi and they have an adorable make-up scene.

Hannah sticks around Jessa some more, who's growing increasingly annoyed at her friend, who not only interrupts her studying but also forces her to go out. Jessa's obviously conflicted between her feelings for Adam and trying to be a good friend to Hannah, who's not making it eas...and Jessa gets meaner and meaner, prompting Hannah to burst at her.

Jessa then shows up at Adam's doorstep and the most awkward sex scene on this show ensues, but they joke about it, making this seem like things will be going to a deeper relationship from here. Afterwards, Adam falls asleep and Jessa is thinking about what this all means.

Elijah (Andrew Rannells) has been pursuing the relationship we saw a glimpse of last episode, with super famous and openly gay reporter Dill (Corey Stoll). Elijah gets adorably psyched when he thinks he's meeting his friends, but then grows awkward when they're at dinner and nobody else shows up, to which he says he doesn't have a problem if what they're building is the type of relationship that doesn't include meeting friends ... and it turns out they were all just late.

Elijah and Dill have some of the sweetest scenes in the episode, like the moment they were in the middle of Times Square and they're taking selfies and signing autographs to Dill's fans, and they end up kissing in the most public place of all Manhattan. Elijah couldn't be happier at the door he's opening, and the sex scene later on is hilarious, kinky and kind of adorable in its own way.
