Sally Field, one of the most respected actresses in Hollywood with a career spanning five decades and two Academy Awards to her name, played Aunt May in the Andrew Garfield-led The Amazing Spider-Man movies -- but recently, the actress told Howard Stern that she wasn't the least bit interested in the part, and in fact only took the role because her friend Laura Ziskin was producing.

Field appeared on The Howard Stern Show last Monday to discuss her career at length, and that included those parts in Hollywood that had left her unfulfilled as an actress. It turns out that her role in Spidey was one of those, as the superhero film is "not [her] kind of movie" and she didn't put "a great deal" of effort into playing Aunt May.

"It's really hard to find a three-dimensional character in it, and you work it as much as you can, but you can't put 10 pounds of sh*t in a five-pound bag," Field said earnestly, via IGN, then explaining the reason she got involved in the project in the first place was because her longtime friend Ziskin was producing. "We knew it would be her last film," she said, also calling her "spectacular."

Ziskin, who was behind films as varied as all five Spidey films and Pretty Woman, died after a long battle with breast cancer 2011, so it's understandable how Field would decide to work with her friend one last time. When Stern asked her whether the idea of appealing to a younger audience was interesting to her, she said that wouldn't "ever blow [her] skirts up," reiterating she appeared on the project for her friend.

Still, shooting Spider-Man wasn't a completely unpleasant experience for the Lincoln actress, as she revealed she still enjoyed working with Garfield, calling him a "lovely, lovely actor."

A lot of people, including producing studio Sony Pictures, seem to share Field's thoughts on the franchise, as the poor box office and critic results prompted the company to team up with Disney to add Spider-Man and its universe to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the new iteration, Aunt May will be played by another Oscar winner: Marisa Tomei.
