As the calendar soon prepares to flip another month, that means we're getting closer and closer to the first Saturday in May --May 7, to be specific--and that could only mean one thing. Of course, that's in reference to "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports," otherwise known as the 2016 Kentucky Derby. Many wonder if this will be the year of Nyquist, Destin or one of the other Thoroughbreds.

The Kentucky Derby, of course, is basically the start of the ever-popular Triple Crown season, serving as the first of the big three horse-racing events. In particular, it's the first leg of the American Triple Crown, which is also comprised of the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. It runs every year in Louisville, Kentucky, stretching a length of one-and-a-quarter miles, and is a Grade I stakes race for 3-year-old Thoroughbred horses at Churchill Downs. It has been run in every single year since 1875, making it one of the more storied and historic traditions in American sports. This year's event will be the 142nd running of the Derby.

In last year's installment, it was American Pharoah who emerged the victor, beginning a historic run that would ultimately net him the sport's first Triple Crown since Affirmed pulled it off in 1978. Following his win at the Derby, American Pharoah went on to win the Preakness Stakes, followed by the Belmont Stakes to pull off the miraculous feat that everyone had been waiting for throughout decades.

With potential history on the line in this year's showing, 2016 Kentucky Derby tickets are already soaring, as information from Razorgator.com indicates the average ticket price at this point in time currently is set at a whopping $1,079.55 -- and there's still well over a month to go before the horses ascend out of the gate. Luckily, the get-in price is much more affordable, clocking in at a mere $69, but that number will undoubtedly increase as the upcoming weeks go by. Fortunately, Churchill Downs parking is very affordable on ParkWhiz.com, and can save fans a significant amount on their parking.

The 2016 version of the Derby promises to have the same trademark enthralling action that's on display annually, especially since it's a wide-open field this year. Nyquist is a popular favorite amongst many racing analysts and fans alike, but horses like Danzing Candy, Destin, Exaggerator and Outwork could easily swoop in and snatch victory.

No matter who prevails in the end, it should be an exciting day of action and activity, with the winner immediately thrust into the spotlight, having the opportunity to match what American Pharoah did in '15 and capture racing's highly elusive Triple Crown. Without question, the Derby is one of the most anticipated Saturday afternoons of the entire calendar year, and the 2016 event looks like it will not disappoint at all.
