The DC flick Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had several defining scenes that offered glimpses at the story behind Ben Affleck's version of Bruce Wayne, but the most poignant moment would be the character looking at Robin's suit in the Bat Cave. 300 director Zack Snyder has just explained how the fleeting moment actually revealed that the Caped Crusader has undergone a lot in the past, including the death of his young sidekick!

Snyder recently spoke to IGN about the scene, revealing that Robin's death was actually caused by Batman's arch nemesis.

"In my mind, it was that Robin had died about 10 years earlier, during some run-in with a young Joker, so there was a fun backstory there to play with," he said, adding, "I felt like the whole idea was that there had been loss and there had been sacrifice."

Although not everyone might share the director's idea of "fun," Snyder explained that it was important to show the brief scene of Bruce contemplating about his actions in front of Robin's vandalized suit in the Bat Cave.

"In a weird way, he sacrificed everything to be Batman," he said of Affleck's character. "He doesn't really have a life outside the cave."

Snyder continued by stating that the inclusion of the deceased Boy Wonder's suit would serve as a grim reminder that Bruce has experienced plenty of loss and heartbreaks in his decision to don the Dark Knight's cowl.

"I thought that by including Robin -- a dead Robin -- was helping us understand that he's been on quite a little journey," he concluded.

But will we actually see Batman try to avenge Robin's death by taking down The Joker? Affleck was previously been spotted on the set of Suicide Squad, which will feature Jared Leto as the DC supervillain. There has even been some leaked footage of Batman riding on top of The Joker's car that has been circulating in social media.

Find out if Batman will take on The Joker when Suicide Squad crashes into theaters on August 6.
