It's no secret that bullying and gang violence is a big issue among the youth. With celebs such as Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and President Obama speaking out on the epidemic things have taken a turn for the worst. 16-year-old girl Amy Joyner was brutally beaten by a gang of females resulting in her death at Howard High School of Technology.

It is being reported that classes were let out early at the Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington as students and staff learned about a classmates death. Investigators are actively trying to piece together the events that have occurred.

According to ABC 7 News, the 16-year-old girl Amy Joyner died Thursday morning after being assaulted by a gang of girls in the school bathroom. The attack took place just after 8:15 in the morning.

The site reports that one witness claims that she was in a stall when the fight broke out.

"She was fighting a girl and then that's when all these other girls started banking her- like jumping on her," the witness tells ABC 7.

Detectives spoke to several witnesses that have admitted that the fight was over a boy. There are also talks of the assault being recorded on one of the students cell phones.

Upon arriving at the scene, medics performed CPR on Joyner, who was taken on a stretcher to an awaiting state police helicopter. She was later pronounced dead at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children.

A vigil was held last night where classmates, friends and parents came together to remember the 16-year-old teen.

"Whenever we had a problem, she would come to us and talk to us, and I never would have thought she would be the girl that would get killed like that," 10th grade student Atiyya Wilkes tells mourners.

Parents and students are outraged that such an incident can take place somewhere that is supposed to be a safe environment for children.

" The anti-bullying thing that schools put on, they don't really listen to em", 9th grade student Julia Scott tells ABC 7. " It honestly has to take something tragic like this to happen for them to actually open their eyes."

No charges have yet to be announced. Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
