Ever since Cary Fukunaga walked away from the It remake, the project has appeared to be aimless, and it had been thought the new Stephen King movie adaptation had been shelved. Now, producing studio Warner Bros. has put it back on track, announcing a new 2017 release date -- but who could possibly fill the creepy clown shoes Tim Curry's Pennywise left 26 years ago?

According to Variety, Warner has just confirmed the movie by announcing a fall release date. Last year, after Fukunaga walked away from the project over creative differences, Warner quickly hired Mamá filmmaker Andrés Muschietti to take the director's chair. But there hasn't been any real news regarding production until now.

The film would begin production as early as this very summer and The Verge reports that, much like the previous adaptation in 1990 (which was in fact a miniseries), it could be split into two parts.

So far, there are no casting decisions announced for the project. When Fukunaga was involved, the filmmaker had cast Curry lookalike Will Poulter (from The Revenant) to play the nightmarish clown. It's unclear if the actor's still attached to the role since so many things have changed since he was first cast. It appears he may have left the movie altogether. Warner could be currently looking for another actor to play Pennywise, plus the rest of the cast.

It wouldn't be surprising to see Curry returning for a smaller role in the new version of King's creepy story. Currently, the actor is filming The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a made-for-television remake of arguably his other most iconic film.Though he was the lead Frank-N-Furter the first time around (even originating the role on stage), he'll be playing The Criminologist in the upcoming version.

It follows a group of friends called The Losers Club who face a monster-clown called Pennywise in their childhoods, and then are haunted by it over the rest of their lives. The new film will premiere on September 18, 2017.
