Record Store Day is just in its sixth year, so it's still relatively new, but for music fans it's becoming an annual holiday. Every year music celebrates independent record stores by releasing must have albums and music for that one day. With music going digital and iTunes dominating the music industry, record stores have become almost extinct. However, music is doing it's part to try and hold onto the classic feel that independent record stores bring to fans and musicians. This Saturday April 20, 2013 will be this year's record store day and if you are a music fan, it's worth checking out your local music store.
A number of legendary artists as well as some relatively new artists are celebrating Record Store Day. David Bowie is releasing a double-sided seven inch record featuring "The Stars (Are Out Tonight)" and "Were Are We Now?" off his new album The Next Day. Meanwhile, The Grateful Dead are making available copies of Rare Cuts & Oddities 1966 12-inch double vinyl record for fans.
Hip hop fans will be happy to know Notorious B.I.G's Ready to Die album on a 12-inch double vinyl will be available. Some current artists who are partaking in the Record Store Day fun are Tegan and Sara, Mumford & Sons, and MGMT. Tegan and Sara are releasing a special album of remixes from various DJ's. There are 10 tracks in all, remixing the duo's latest single "Closer" off their new album Heartthrob. Mumford & Sons are putting out a four track EP with live tracks from Live at Bull Moose available in CD and vinyl. MGMT will be releasing a track rumored to be on their new album. The band's single "Alien Days" will be made available in cassette format for fans to listen to.
